Bruges, Part Two – Beautiful Beers And Spectacular Waffles

“Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.” – Benjamin Franklin

One of the main reasons that I wanted to go to Belgium is for the beer. Belgian style beers are some of my absolute favorites.  Belgium has over 900 different beers, and many of the bars carry a fairly decent selection of those 900.

Is it crazy to go to a country just for the beer?  Maybe to some people.  I was able to enjoy and also bring back some beers from the Westvleteren abbey.  Some sites rate them as the best in the world.  While I haven’t tasted all the other beers to give them a true comparison, I would definitely put them around the top of my list.

Of course, I didn’t go to Belgium just for the beers.  There is also the chocolate and the waffles.  I went to a cafe renowned for its Liege style waffles (they have a middle layer of extra sugary goodness), and had waffles that went beyond what I dreamt waffles could be. The chocolate was spectacular.

There is also a really fun museum in Bruges dedicated to the frite or “French fry”.  It details the history of the frite, the cooking process, and the marketing and selling of a now worldwide product.  Downstairs, there is a cafe where you can get some amazing frites and 10 different sauces to dip them in.

Between the architecture, the beers, the waffles, the chocolate, and the frites; Bruges was a pure slice of heaven on Earth.  Here are some more photos from my time there.
